Amid probe, UNC assistant coach Blake resigns

CBSSports.com w John Blake has resigned his position on North Carolinas football staff, effective immediately, school officials said Sunday night.

Blake, who was in his fourth season working with Butch Davis, said in a statement issued by the school that he stepped down because "my presence has become a distraction" to the university.

"Consequently, I have determined that it is in the best interests of my family, the university community at large, and the football program for me to step down from my position as associate head football coach," Blake said.

Dalton keeps TCU's title hopes on track

Special to C TCUs season almost ended before it began.

And Andy Dalton wasnt about to sit around and watch the Horned Frogs lose bac and ruin a shot at another BCS-busting season.

The four-year starter set TCUs all-time record for wins by a quarterback, piloting the sixth-ranked Frogs to a 30-21 victory over No. 24 Oregon S surpassing Pro Football Hall of Famer Sammy Baugh.

"We knew all we had to do was win by one," said Dalton, the NCAAs active leader in wins.

Dalton ran for two touchdowns and threw for another in the Frogs come-from most of whom wore TCU purple.

UNC's Sturdivant, Carter cleared

North Carolina linebackers Quan Sturdivant and Bruce Carter have been cleared to play in the 18th-ranked Tar Heels opener against No. 21 LSU on Saturday.

Safety Deunta Williams will not play due to the ongoing NCAA investigation into the program.

The three players didnt travel with the team when it left Chapel Hill for Atlanta on Friday morning as the school conferred with the NCAA on their status. While Sturdivant and Carter will play, the university said in a statement Friday night the NCAA needed more information before ruling on Williams.

Home field continues to be Utah's advantage

Special to When the University of Utah signed a deal with Under Armour for the company to be its official apparel supplier, the Utes really took the companys slogan to heart.

Any Michigan man will tell you, there is nothing quite like beating Ohio State. Every Buckeye agrees, a win over that team from up North is priority No. 1.
